History of Fundraising

Since the need for money has been realized, the need for fundraising has likewise been appreciated and utilized.  The history of fundraising stems from thousands of years in the past and continues to be a profitable technique in modern day.

Beginning in ancient Greece and Rome, inhabitants gathered local money in order to build theatres and provide for others. Most of these efforts benefited everyone involved, including those who donated the monies, time and other beneficial items. Many feasts and services for the homeless were often based off of fundraising efforts arranged by local citizens.  During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, funds were continually raised for war efforts and other political and social endeavors.

In addition to communal fundraising, the existence of fundraising in religion has been present since the dawn of religion itself.  From Buddhism to Hinduism to Judaism and Christianity, fundraising has always been an integral part of the survival and success of religions.  To this day, many churches require or request tithes and other donations ranging from small to very large amounts.  Churches have historically been known for organizing fundraising efforts through garage sales, bake sales, and communal dinners.  In addition, many churches have profited from childcare services provided during church hours.  Without fundraising and support, many religions would be desperate to uphold their institutions.

When universities and other colleges became more prominent, fundraising tactics were again put front and center.  Sororities, fraternities, clubs, and sports teams of colleges have always found fundraising to be the most providential way of earning extra funds to provide themselves with necessities as well as extra curricular engagements.  The community support that is found on University campuses is a testament to the effectiveness of many fundraising efforts.

Since the need for political influence has emerged, so has the need for ample funds to support the differing views and parties.  In the past, politicians have asked for donations of money to support the war, fallen war victim’s children, and those who lost their homes and jobs as a result of war and economic depression.  Today, presidential candidates and other elected officials thrive off of their fundraising campaigns; without their fundraising efforts, there would be little room for advancement.

Because most non-profit organizations such as churches, colleges and political parties are in desperate need of money, the history of fundraising is rich.  The tactic for earning money stems back thousands of years, and it proves to still be a beneficial campaign for earning and accepting monies.
